Without discrimination, I write this as a Black Man and a Father: It is my duty and a privilege to preserve (before it becomes extinct) the dying breed called, “Young Black Men (YBM)”. I, as you may know, have a total of three YBM ages 22, 19 and 15. This is the hardest job that I enjoy doing. As a self-employed individual all of my life, I’ve worked in my home studio (unless I was making an out-of-town appearance or on tour) which basically made me the “Stay-Home-Dad”. Yes, I signed the permission slips and attended the PTA meetings, apron and all (LOL). Though my dad was always in my life, I never had the tightness that I share with my boys. I’ve always wanted to request that from my dad but was too afraid to. One day, knowing that it may be possible that my sons may be too afraid to correct my parental skills, I decided to create a Parent Report Card and allow them to freely grade me as a parent. The grading system was Excellent, Good, Fair and Poor. The content was Respect, Favoritism, Punishment, Family Activities and Communication. This was one of my greatest days in which my sons gave the vehicle they call Daddy…an alignment. You see, we sometimes need adjustments too and we’re not gonna know that if we don’t seriously communicate with our seeds. Though I am very proud of my work thus far, I am so far from completing my work. There are negative forces out there that I must fight daily to prevent them from penetrating my boys. One day’s injury could take a lifetime of recovery. I can’t afford any injury whatsoever because who wants to spend their lives recovering when if they’d just do their job they could spend their lives Rejoicing. Pray for me and my YBM as I pray for you and yours. God Bless. – Kang.
