The father factor and If there's no man about the house..(Hope this helps single moms or kids.)

The father factor

There are families where mothers are doing a great job of raising kids alone, without any input from either their children's dad or another male role model. However, research suggests that in most families, a father figure is important on many levels.

'Children reap positive benefits if they have active and regular engagement with a father figure,' says Dr Anna Sarkadi from the Department of Women's and Children's Health at Uppsala University in Sweden, who recently participated in a review of studies of children and family life, carried out over the past 20 years.

The researchers found that children who had positive father figures in their lives were more successful academically and found it easier to develop friendships with children of both sexes. The review also revealed that not having a dad around is particularly difficult for boys: those with a highly engaged father were less likely to have behavioural problems as they matured.

Other studies have shown that children who live with both a mother figure and a father figure are less likely to go off the rails – for example, get on the wrong side of the law, become a teenage parent, smoke, drink alcohol and take drugs – than those who just live with their mum.
Does DNA matter?

The jury's still out on whether children benefit equally from having a biological parent or another father figure on board, but the key is that any man in their life must be a positive force.
If there's no man about the house...

* Make sure your children – especially boys – have positive and consistent male role models (such as your partner; a grandparent, godparent, close family friend or teacher).

* Whatever level of contact your children's father has with his kids, keep him informed about what they're doing and do your best to facilitate their time together.

* When you're talking to your children, be positive about men and their role in society. Encourage them to forge friendships with both boys and girls.

* With boys in particular, help them follow up any interest they show in 'male-biased' hobbies or sports.
